The integration of adaptive artificial intelligence (AI) into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education has emerged as a transformative force, promising individualized learning pathways, real-time feedback, and enhanced learner autonomy. This paper conducts a thematic analysis of recent empirical and theoretical literature to identify the dominant patterns, affordances, and tensions shaping AI-driven personalization in EFL contexts. Drawing on systematic reviews, qualitative studies, and pedagogical frameworks published between 2024 and 2026, the analysis surfaces five interconnected themes: (1) adaptive personalization as a reconceptualization of the learning process, (2) the role of immediate and scaffolded feedback, (3) persistent challenges of cultural and contextual sensitivity, (4) the evolving and irreplaceable role of the human teacher, and (5) ethical infrastructure as a prerequisite for equitable implementation. The synthesis reveals that while AI tools significantly enhance language proficiency across all skill domains, their effectiveness is contingent upon culturally adaptive architectures, robust teacher training, and institutional safeguards against data misuse and algorithmic bias. The paper concludes by presenting a human-centered AI–EFL pedagogy model that positions AI as a mediating tool under continuous human oversight, and it outlines implications for educators, policymakers, and technology developers.
